Our Mission

ZWASA is a registered NPO (REF: 248-895 NPO) which promotes and supports Zero Waste circular economy principles. The organisation was established on 8 July 2020 as a voluntary association and registered as an NPO in August 2020.

ZWASA’s Mission and Vision are to empower communities and change agents in South Africa, in order to instil a paradigm shift away from “Waste Management” to “Resource Management” and to adopt smarter lifestyles and sustainable consumption patterns.

Our Main Objectives

  1. To facilitate the establishment in South Africa of Zero Waste Integrated Management Models that have been implemented successfully in other countries, such as for example, Treviso Province (Italy); San Fernando (Philippines); and San Francisco (USA).
  2. To strengthen the national movement towards sustainable waste practices and to provide institutional capacity building services to organisations promoting reduce; reuse; repair; recycle; rethink and redesign and circular economy principles throughout South Africa.
  3. To promote and facilitate the implementation of the key components of Zero Waste Integrated Management Systems.

ZWASA is a core member of several international organisations namely: 

  • Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA); A global network of +1000 organisations in 92 countries working for a just, toxic-free, zero waste world.
  • Break Free From Plastic (BFFP); A global movement envisioning a future free from plastic pollution.
  • Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA); An alliance working towards a world without waste through public education and practical application of zero waste principles.
